How Long Do Dermal Filler Results Last?

Dermal fillers are a popular treatment to minimize signs of aging, such as volume loss, sagging skin, and wrinkles. They can also be used as a nonsurgical method of augmenting areas of the face including the lips, cheeks, or nose. Dermal fillers are usually composed of hyaluronic acid, which provides temporary correction. This means that the results are not permanent, and maintenance injections will be needed to achieve lasting correction.

Dr. Rachel Ness and the Fargo Dermatology team offer two popular types of dermal fillers: Juvederm and Restylane. The longevity of your dermal filler results will primarily depend on the product used and the location within which it is injected. In addition, an individual’s metabolism can affect longevity.

How Long Does Juvederm Voluma XC Last?

Juvederm Voluma XC is typically used to restore volume loss in the cheeks for a lifted and more youthful appearance. The product typically lasts for about 18-24 months.

How Long Does Restylane Last?

Restylane is a family of injectable products with varying hyaluronic acid formulas, each designed for specific injection sites and desired volume.

Restylane is a popular treatment to correct the nasolabial folds, or the “parentheses” around your mouth, since the product can last up to 18 months.

Restylane Lyft can be used to restore volume in the cheeks or the back of the hands. It typically lasts 12 months in the face or 6 months in the hands.

Restylane Kysse is used to nonsurgically augment the lips, and typically lasts up to one year.

Restylane Refyne and Defyne are used for wrinkles and folds in various regions of the face, both of which typically last up to 12 months.

Why Aren’t Dermal Fillers Permanent?

Dermal fillers are not considered permanent because the body naturally metabolizes the hyaluronic acid over time. The body produces an enzyme called Hyaluronidase, which breaks down the product. It is then naturally and safely flushed away. The longevity of dermal filler results vary from patient-to-patient depending on their unique metabolism, among other factors. Dr. Ness will establish a treatment plan with suitable maintenance injection appointments for you after a consultation.
