What Are Leg Veins

Leg veins are also called spider or varicose veins. These are damaged veins that develop when valves within them start to weaken. When these valves weaken, some blood flows backward and accumulates within the vein. This extra blood puts pressure on the walls of the vein and in time, the vein walls weaken and bulge. This is what causes what is seen on the skin. Some people have a higher risk of developing varicose or spider veins. It can be genetic. Also, if you sit or stand for long periods of time during most days then this becomes more likely to occur.

How Are Leg Veins Treated?

Leg veins are harmless for the most part. Often, they affect your appearance more than anything. However, some people experience some pain and discomfort from them. In severe cases, these veins could lead to a blood clot, they may rupture, or develop into ulcers on the skin. Luckily, our team at Fargo Center For Dermatology can treat these leg veins to help you avoid these risks and help you feel more confident in your legs.

Types of Treatments:

  • Cutera CoolGlide 1064- This delivers pulses of light energy that causes the blood in the vein to coagulate. This eventually destroys the vessel which is later reabsorbed into the body.
  • Iridex VariLite Laser- This laser emits infrared light beams that penetrate the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the blood vessels. This process generates heat that destroys the tissues in the vessel. Once these are destroyed, they are expelled through the body’s natural process.

Leg Veins Treatment Maintenance

After your leg veins treatment, your skin will be a bit sensitive. It is normal to experience some redness, inflammation, and some minor discomfort afterward. To help your skin stay smooth and moisturized. Dr. Ness recommend some of our skincare products during the consultation. To avoid varicose veins it is important to exercise, elevate your legs, and avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time.
