How Botox® Can Help You Stop Sweating So Much
You know that Botox® is an exceedingly popular and easy way to soften the appearance of facial wrinkles, but did you know it has other FDA-approved uses? In fact, one of the more satisfying procedures that utilize Botox® on areas other than the face is for hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. If you find it difficult to keep your underarms dry in stressful or warm environments, Botox® may be a perfect solution for you.
What is Hyperhidrosis?
Excessive sweating can be medically diagnosed as hyperhidrosis. Common symptoms include excessive sweating leading to dehydration, sweating at cool or room temperatures, or sweating unpredictably. Most commonly this affects the underarms, but every hair follicle on your body can produce sweat.
How Can Botox® Help?
The active ingredient in Botox® is botulinum toxin a, a type of neuromodulator that inhibits a specific chemical from leaving a nerve cell and stimulating a muscle or gland. In cosmetic treatments with Botox®, this is helpful in dampening the muscle response of certain facial muscle groups, such as those between the eyes that lead to frown lines.
To treat hyperhidrosis, Botox® is injected into the underarm area to inhibit overly active nerves that signal sweat glands to secrete their substance. This treatment works at the source, stopping sweat in its tracks so you don’t have to worry about wearing multiple layers or using harsh antiperspirants.
Botox® For Hyperhidrosis Treatment
The procedure for Botox® hyperhidrosis is quick and simple. The underarm will be prepped and marked before our Botox® specialist makes several small injections of the formula. Although this can sound intimidating or scary, the needle used is the smallest one out there, and patients who undergo this procedure can expect very little discomfort or pain. The treatment takes place in our office and takes less than an hour to perform.
Results and Recovery
Your results are not available immediately, so if you’re hoping to have this done before a big event or the start of summer, you’ll want to aim for about 2 weeks before that time. Once the Botox® takes full effect, you’ll be able to enjoy dry underarms for between four to six months, so make sure to schedule a maintenance appointment at the end of this period.
There’s no downtime required after underarm Botox® injections, and the effects will continue to work after multiple appointments.
