What is the Excimer Laser?

The excimer laser utilizes ultraviolet light to target the affected skin cells, leaving the rest of the skin intact and unharmed. When UVB is administered to an area experiencing psoriasis or vitiligo, it can result in a decrease in cell production or an increase in pigmentation respectively. The excimer laser offers promising results for conditions that don’t otherwise have many options besides topical treatments. Most patients undergo a series of easy, painless treatments at our Fargo office.

How Does the Excimer Laser Work?

The excimer laser has been shown to be effective in treating chronic skin conditions like psoriasis and vitiligo. It works by penetrating the skin with UVB rays, damaging unwanted skin cells, and slowing their growth. In the case of psoriasis patients, many notice that their flareups show improvement during the summer months because of UV rays. Because the UV rays don’t affect the outlying skin during excimer treatment, this option is safe and effective when used as a treatment package with multiple sessions and additional topical treatments.

Had a great experience here! Knowledgeable staff, great front desk, and even better patient care. All my questions were answered, and options were given. Very up front about costs as well! Highly recommend this place!

What Can the Excimer Laser Treat?

The excimer laser can produce effective results on chronic skin conditions that are caused by skin cell growth. It can be beneficial to areas that are traditionally difficult to treat because of their location, like the joints and scalp. Our recommended excimer treatments include:

  • Vitiligo
  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Atopic Dermatitis

Excimer Treatment Maintenance

Dr. Ness recommends that patients undergo a series of excimer treatments for the most significant clearing of flareups or symptoms. Most often, this includes a series of ten to twelve treatment sessions which can be performed two to three times per week. After this treatment plan, most patients notice a remission of their symptoms for months after. During a consultation at our Fargo office, Dr. Ness can create a customized treatment plan for you based on your symptoms, severity, and goals.

Most patients experience few side effects after treatment, although redness at the treatment site is common. It’s important to ensure that, before treatment, your affected areas are free of any products that could prevent effective treatment, like those containing SPF. Most sessions can be completed in fifteen minutes or less, depending on how large your treatment area is.
