What is the Xtrac® Excimer Laser?

The Xtrac® Excimer Laser utilizes ultraviolet light to target the affected skin cells, leaving the rest of the skin intact and unharmed. When UVB is administered to an area experiencing psoriasis or vitiligo, it can result in a decrease in cell production or an increase in pigmentation respectively. The Xtrac® Excimer Laser offers promising results for conditions that don’t otherwise have many options besides topical treatments. Most patients undergo a series of easy, painless treatments at our Fargo office.

How Does the Xtrac® Excimer Laser Work?

The Xtrac® Excimer Laser has been shown to be effective in treating chronic skin conditions like psoriasis and vitiligo. It works by penetrating the skin with UVB rays, damaging unwanted skin cells, and slowing their growth. In the case of psoriasis patients, many notice that their flareups show improvement during the summer months because of UV rays. Because the UV rays don’t affect the outlying skin during Xtrac® Excimer Laser treatment, this option is safe and effective when used as a treatment package with multiple sessions and additional topical treatments.

What Can the Xtrac® Excimer Laser Treat?

The Xtrac® Excimer Laser can produce effective results on chronic skin conditions that are caused by skin cell growth. It can be beneficial to areas that are traditionally difficult to treat because of their location, like the scalp. Indications for Xtrac® Excimer Laser treatments include:

Xtrac® Excimer Laser Treatment Maintenance

Dr. Ness recommends that patients undergo a series of Xtrac® Excimer Laser treatments for the most significant clearing of flareups or symptoms. Most often, this includes a series of ten to twelve treatment sessions which can be performed two to three times per week. After a series of treatments, most patients notice a remission of their symptoms for months after. During a consultation at our Fargo office, Dr. Ness can create a customized treatment plan for you based on your symptoms, severity, and goals.

Most patients experience few side effects after treatment, although redness at the treatment site is common. It’s important to ensure that, before treatment, your affected areas are free of any products that could prevent effective treatment, like those containing SPF. Most sessions can be completed in fifteen minutes or less, depending on how large your treatment area is.
