What are PDO Threads?

One key cause of aging is the breakdown of collagen, an important protein that gives your skin its quality and elasticity. As you age, the skin begins to sag and fold, causing telltale signs like wrinkles, jowls, and neck laxity. PDO thread lifts are a non-surgical cosmetic procedure using an absorbable suture made of Polydiaxanone (PDO). These types of sutures have been in use in surgeries for many decades but have only recently started to be used as an aesthetic tool.

There are three different kinds of PDO threads, ranging from smooth threads for fine lines and wrinkles to barbed threads that are used for lifting. Each type offers different benefits and Nikki Welk, PA-C can help you select the best option for your needs. In any case, PDO threads not only lift and tighten the skin, but dissolve over time to prompt the regeneration of new collagen to take its place. The result is longer lasting improvement than many other non-surgical skin tightening treatments.

The Thread Lift Procedure

During the procedure, small incisions are made in the treatment area, and threads are carefully inserted to lift loose skin and provide support. The threads’ tiny barbs or smooth sutures anchor into the skin, allowing the provider to lift sagging areas such as the cheeks, jowls, neck lines, or midface. Patients typically feel only slight pressure or a pulling sensation during the procedure, and local anesthetic ensures minimal discomfort.

Once inserted, the threads trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating new collagen production over the following weeks. This collagen not only supports the lifted skin but also improves skin elasticity, texture, and overall firmness. Because the threads dissolve naturally over time, their effects continue to enhance the treated area, often lasting up to two years depending on the patient’s skin condition and lifestyle.

PDO Threads Maintenance

PDO threads typically last for 1-2 years depending on a variety of factors. Nikki typically recommends pairing your PDO thread lift with additional anti-aging options like dermal fillers, Botox, and treatments designed to further tighten the skin.  During a consultation, our experienced team will help you develop the ideal anti-aging package for your needs.

Immediately after treatment, most patients experience only mild swelling, bruising, or soreness in the treated area, which usually resolves within a few days. To ensure optimal results, patients are advised to avoid excessive facial movements, rubbing the treated area, or strenuous exercise for the first week or two. Elevating the head while sleeping and following post-procedure care instructions can help lift sagging skin and allow new collagen to develop, resulting in a more youthful appearance over the following weeks.
