What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a skin condition that presents as mild to extreme redness, usually at the center of the face. However, this redness can manifest in other areas of the skin as well. It can also come with more than redness, and there are four types of rosacea:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea: Redness that shows visible blood vessels
  2. Papulopustular Rosacea: Redness that comes with swelling and acneic breakouts
  3. Phymatous Rosacea: Redness that comes with thickness and texture
  4. Ocular Rosacea: Redness and irritation within the eyes and around the eyelids

What Causes Rosacea?

It’s not entirely known what causes rosacea, but there are some factors that rosacea patients have in common. For example, most rosacea patients are between 30 and 50 years old, fair-skinned, of northern European ancestry, and have struggled with chronic acne. Rosacea can also be hereditary, meaning most patients have family members that also struggle with it.

Scientists believe that the immune system may cause rosacea, as well as the skin’s makeup. Rosacea is most often reactive, however, meaning that certain things can trigger it to flare up. These triggers are usually unique for each patient.

I have seen Dr. Ness since the day she opened. History of basal skin cancers and she takes care of me and my entire family. My family even comes from Bismarck to see her. I LOVE her new line of skincare, especially vitamin C and tinted sunscreen! She is the BEST and my kids love her.

How is Rosacea Treated?

There is no way to completely cure rosacea, but Dr. Ness can recommend a treatment package that includes lifestyle changes and professional treatments. Rosacea can worsen without treatment, so it’s important to see Dr. Ness as soon as you begin to see symptoms, especially because other conditions can also present similarly to this one. Rosacea usually responds well to professional treatments, including laser techniques. Dr. Ness utilizes the Cynosure® Icon Max G system to reduce redness and other symptoms of rosacea. Chemical peels can also be an effective option. Additionally, topical and oral prescription medications can be used along with treatments to help manage symptoms at home.

Rosacea Management

Rosacea can take a toll on your quality of life and cause many anxieties when it comes to navigating everyday tasks. Although professional treatments can be effective, at-home skin care and lifestyle changes are two of the most important steps to take in preventing flare-ups. It’s important to track any possible triggers and discuss them with Dr. Ness to see how you can avoid them. Some of the most common are certain foods (spicy meals, coffee, and alcohol are common), cold weather, medications, or cosmetics. Additionally, it’s important to develop a skincare regimen that both protects your skin from triggers (using daily sunscreen) and reduces existing redness. You should ensure that your skin care products are gentle and will not irritate the skin, causing additional redness. During a consultation with Dr. Ness, she can recommend the best products for your skin and cosmetic goals.
