Everything To Know Before Your IPL Photofacial

As technology progresses, more and more common concerns regarding the skin’s appearance can be resolved without requiring surgery, downtime, or an invasive procedure. Common signs of aging or sun damage can be effectively treated using photofacials performed by a trained professional. Before you schedule your first appointment, here are some of the basics of photofacials.

Choosing IPL

An IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, Photofacial is a great option to treat sun damage, wrinkles, fine lines, stretch marks, age spots, and other skin concerns. This treatment is also referred to as photorejuvenation or simply a photofacial. IPL works by targeting deeper layers of the skin to address broken capillaries or sun-damaged cells. This treatment should always be performed by a professional in a clean, safe setting. At Fargo Center for Dermatology, we use the Cynosure Icon Max G and Max Y systems for IPL photofacials.

How Do Photofacials Work?

Photofacials work by directing rapid flashes of light to the skin. This light is then quickly absorbed by red blood cells and melanin, or the pigmentation within the skin. This process damages these parts of the skin intentionally to break apart unwanted pigment, which is later absorbed naturally by the body, revealing a more even skin tone.

What is the Photofacial Procedure Like?

Prior to your IPL Photofacial procedure, you will receive a numbing cream to ensure you are comfortable during treatment. Dark glasses will be provided throughout the treatment to protect your eyes from the light. Your provider will then use the IPL handpiece to run the device along your skin, targeting pigmented areas. This process can be completed in as little as 45 minutes.

What is Recovery Like After an IPL Photofacial?

One of the many benefits of IPL photofacials is the minimal to no downtime following the procedure. You will likely see temporary side effects which can include slight swelling, redness, and sensitivity. Symptoms should subside within a week after receiving your treatment. We highly recommend avoiding sun exposure after your treatment session and wearing SPF daily. However, you can begin applying your normal skincare products or makeup immediately after the treatment.

For most patients, multiple treatment sessions are required to reach your ideal results. Patients will typically receive 3-4 treatments total, scheduled about a month apart.
