What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure designed to help rejuvenate your skin by creating safe, controlled skin injuries in order to produce new collagen and elastin. As the skin undergoes its’ natural repair process, it results in renewed skin with an improvement in texture and firmness. This process builds new skin tissue on your face so that any long-term skin problems you may have can be replaced by new, healthy cells. Whether you are concerned about wrinkles, acne scars, or sun damage, microneedling is an effective solution.
How are Micro-Needling Treatments Done?
Micro-needling treatments are performed using the SkinPen® device and a topical anesthetic. This applicator has many micro-needles that lightly penetrate the skin, causing controlled injuries which activate your skin’s natural healing processes. This helps to rebuild skin tissue with natural collagen, which helps keep the skin smooth and firm. SkinPen is the first FDA-approved microneedling instrument, although other common forms of microneedling use dermarollers.
SkinPen microneedling works in three phases. First, the skin is injured, causing your body to start cleaning and disinfecting the wound, getting rid of debris and bacteria as it prepares to create new tissue. Then, the wound is rebuilt with new cells and blood vessels. After that, the wound is replaced with new skin tissue.

Microneedling Maintenance
Micro-needling is a minimally-invasive procedure, so recovery time is minimal. Most patients require no downtime at all. It is important to note that, for the first 24 hours following the procedure, you should avoid working out or being exposed to excessive heat so that you avoid sweating, as this can cause inflammation. Some patients experience redness, bruising, or tingling sensations (similar to sunburn), but these are minimal and should go away within 24 to 48 hours. Your skin will be more sensitive after the procedure, so using sunscreen is a must. During a consultation, we can recommend the best sunscreens from our full line of in-house products.
After treatment, most patients notice their skin has a healthy glow. Visible improvements in the skin develop over the course of the next few weeks as new collagen begins to grow, and your skin heals. Results continue to improve for up to six months after treatment as collagen production continues. We recommend a treatment package of at least three treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. You can also opt for additional skin rejuvenation treatments and physician-grade products to boost your results.

Are Microneedling results permanent?
As collagen depletes with the aging process, maintenance treatments, use of a prescription strength retinoid and sun protection help to prolong microneedling treatment efficacy.
Can you microneedle too often?
SkinPen Microneedling treatments are recommended to be done at least 4 weeks apart to allow for skin regeneration and repair which generally takes at least 30 days. The frequency of treatments depends on the device and depth of the microneedling.
Does Microneedling help enlarged pores?
SkinPen microneedling stimulates collagen and elastin production in our skin which can be helpful to tighten enlarged pores. The use of medical grade at-home products will compliment microneedling treatments, and may help diminish appearance of pores over time.
Does Microneedling help forehead wrinkles?
Microneedling can be used to address many different concerns including facial lines, wrinkles, scarring, acne scarring, and some discoloration. Forehead wrinkles soften in appearance, and work very well in conjunction to neurotoxins.
Does your face bleed after Microneedling?
Pinpoint bleeding is to be anticipated during Microneedling treatments, but typically resolves by the end of the treatment. On-going bleeding after microneedling is rare.
Can you get a chemical peel after Microneedling?
We would recommend waiting at least 3-4 weeks after a SkinPen microneedling treatment before doing a chemical peel due to the skin's repair cycle.
Does Microneedling work on older skin?
Microneedling can benefit almost all types of skin. The healthier the skin is, generally the better the response to treatment. We also recommend a diligent at-home skincare routine including a retinoid, and sun protection to compliment your microneedling treatments.
How many sessions of Microneedling do you need?
Microneedling can be used to address many different concerns including facial lines, wrinkles, scarring, acne scarring, and some discoloration. Microneedling generally works best in a series of 3-6 treatments, depending on patient's goals, and severity of what is being treated.
Can I use hyaluronic acid after Microneedling?
Avoid using products other than what is recommended by your provider for 24 hours after the procedure. Using a Vitamin C serum, and retinoid products 5 days after your SkinPen microneedling treatment will significantly enhance your results. Hyaluronic acid can be used on the skin as soon as 24 hours post Skinpen treatments.
Can Microneedling be done under eyes?
Yes. Microneedling can be performed under the eyes with a gentle technique as this area is very sensitive. SkinPen microneedling can be beneficial for fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes to help soften appearance and firm delicate skin.
Can Microneedling be used on the neck?
Yes! Microneedling can be used on almost any area of the body to promote textural improvements and collagen stimulation.
Do you peel after Microneedling?

Microneedling may help address appearance of broken capallaries over time. However, depending on appearance, a better option for strictly targeting broken capallaries may be and IPL or laser treatment.

How do you prepare for Microneedling?
Avoid exfoliating 3-5 days prior to the treatment including discontinuing use of retinoids. Drinking plenty of water can help with tight/dry skin that occurs following microneedling treatments. The patient will also want to prophylactically take prescription Valtrex, if there is a history of cold sores.
How long does your face stay red after Microneedling?
Redness typically lasts about 1-2 days for most patients, but for some patients redness can take up to 3-5 days to completely resolve.
Is Micro Needling painful?
While SkinPen microneedling can be uncomfortable, we provide a topical numbing cream to help with discomfort during the treatment. Once the numbing cream takes effect, the treatment is very tolerable with minimal discomfort.
What does your face look like after Microneedling?
After SkinPen microneedling, the skin can be pink to bright red and feel like a mild sunburn. Some patients may experience mild swelling, a dry and flakey appearance which typicall resolves within 1-2 days after the treatment.
What should I put on my face after Microneedling?
A water-based serum will be given post SkinPen miconeedling for use on the skin. Avoid using products other than what is recommended by your provider for at least 24 hours after the procedure to avoid any potential reactions.
When can I shower after Microneedling?
Avoid hot showers for 24 hours after SkinPen treatments. If showering, use only gentle pressure and lukewarm water.
Is microdermabrasion or Microneedling better?
Microdermabrasion treatments are beneficial for many skin types. SkinPen Microneedling allows tiny needles to penetrate the skin for a more aggressive treatment
What is the difference between Microneedling and derma rolling?
SkinPen Microneedling treatments that are done in a clinic setting, are able to treat at a deeper, more controlled level to further benefit the skin, and consist of higher quality needles.
What products do you use for micro needling?
A water-based gel or serum may be used during the SkinPen treatment to provide slip to the skin and help decrease dryness to the skin. Another commonly used product is sterile saline during the treatment.
Is micro needling better than laser?
SkinPen microneedling can be beneficial when laser treatments are not an option for a patient due to various reasons including certain prescription medications, skin tone, or some skin conditions. Depending on the type of laser being used, SkinPen treatments can sometimes be more beneficial than laser.
What does Micro Needling feel like?
While SkinPen microneedling can be uncomfortable, we provide a topical numbing cream to help with discomfort during the treatment. Once the numbing cream takes effect, the treatment is very tolerable with minimal discomfort. The feeling may resemble very gentle scraping on the skin.
