What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic therapy, or PDT, uses a combination of special medication and light energy to manage areas where unwanted skin growth or cell activity is occurring. It’s a very effective treatment that has a wide range of uses, especially in skin conditions that don’t commonly react to other treatments. In cases of localized skin cancer, it has shown promise as an excellent alternative to surgical techniques.

How Does Photodynamic Therapy Work?

Photodynamic therapy requires two different steps— the first is administering a special medication called a photosensitizing agent, which can be put over the skin or within the bloodstream. This causes the treated cells to become reactive to light energy. Then, laser light is applied to the treatment area. When this happens, the photosensitizing agent reacts and damages the cells or blood vessels causing the skin condition. Sometimes, a period of time is required between administering the medication and applying the laser technology so that your body has time to absorb it and become photosensitive.

What Can Photodynamic Therapy Treat?

Photodynamic Therapy Maintenance

Photodynamic therapy is usually performed in a series of treatments to best address your concern areas. During a consultation at our Fargo office, Dr. Ness can create the right treatment package for you and your skin, which can also include at-home care with our full line of physician-grade skincare products. You may also benefit from maintenance treatments with PDT, in certain cases. After your treatment session, it’s highly important that you avoid sunlight for the first two days, since your skin will be highly photosensitive. Because of this, you can expect some redness or peeling after treatment. You should avoid using your regular skincare products for the first few days, and Dr. Ness can instruct you on which products will be gentle and most beneficial to your skin after treatment.
